Let Turmeric Be Your Tylenol - Close the Door to Your Medicine Cabinet
What do you do when you are struggling with pain and inflammation? Most people immediately reach for the medicine cabinet for tylenol or aspirin. In our society, we treat these medications like they are not at all harmful...that it is perfectly fine to take these medications in mass quantities every day if need be. I used to do this, too. My husband popped more than I was even aware of because of his physically taxing job as a Union Sheet Metal Worker. Today, we usually don't even have it in our house. I forget about it until someone is visiting and asks for something for pain...and then I remember how we used to be. I don't ever want to go back.
Because I have not had to deal with pain too much lately, I forgot what I used to use as my go-to pain control...and it is probably not what you are thinking. This week, I had a couple of days where I didn't feel my best...and I knew that my body was struggling with inflammation. As an MS patient, they will offer serious painkillers like Oxycontin. My go-to anti-inflammatory is Turmeric.
You have probably seen the recipes for Golden Milk. Here is one to try from fabhow.com if you haven't:
I, however, do not like Golden Milk. It was something that I found I was choking down to get the anti-inflammatory benefits of it. Additionally, since going keto, I do not want to add honey to my drinks. I do something much more simple than all of this. I pour myself a glass of almond milk, put a teaspoon of turmeric in it, and put freshly ground pepper in it. The pepper is supposed to help you to absorb the turmeric. Mix it all up, and drink. You will be surprised how quickly the turmeric makes you feel better and reduces your inflammation.
Simple Dairy-Free Keto Turmeric Milk
Mix the following ingredients together and enjoy:
1 cup nut milk of choice
1-2 teaspoons of ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
Additionally, there are supplements that you can take. I take one daily. When I started the daily supplement, I stopped drinking turmeric in my milk. When I find that I am struggling with inflammation, though....and I am tempted to reach for a Tylenol....I make this quick Turmeric Milk instead. When I was really struggling with MS symptoms, I would even carry a jar of turmeric in my purse with me. I didn't have the option of almond milk at work, but I would simply shake some into my tea and drink it that way. Within a 1/2 hour my symptoms would dissipate.
I hope that you try out this remedy, either the Golden Milk recipe, or my more simplified version of Turmeric Milk. I am grateful that there is something to help treat pain without turning to drugs for help. I never would have believed that this would work until I challenged myself to try it. Hopefully it can help you to leave the door on the medicine cabinet shut, too.
